Preface


The Thirty-First Annual Pacific Northwest Regional Economics conference was held April 24-26, 1997, in Spokane, Washington. The conference theme was Regions in Transition. Plenary sessions, special panel sessions and many individual paper presentations focused on this theme.

These proceedings contain abstracts for 61 of the 64 papers presented at the conference, and unedited five-page summaries for 35 papers submitted for publication on this website. The abstracts and papers may be accessed from the listings posted in the box above.

Featured speakers at the conference included Roger Binner of DRI/McGraw-Hill, who discussed the national economic outlook; Jerry Jordan, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, who addressed the issue of the "Governments' Role in Job Creation"; and Jack Ward Thomas, former Chief of the U.S. Forest Service. The Tiebot Lecture was delivered by Calvin Beale of the USDA Economic Research Service, whose talk was entitled "Forces Underlying the Recent Rebound of Rural Areas and Small Towns."
